OLED Monochrome

Where LCD (including TFT) technology is still dominating the market, OLED solutions are getting more popular for demanding solutions as low power, high contrast and very high response time. Next to that advantages of OLED are low profile and the main application is still consumer related products. In addition to most LCDs, many OLED displays can display 16 levels of gray scales.

For our customers we recommend the COB (Chip on Board) types. These are more constant in size, pinning etc. and the mounting is easier. On the other hand the COG (Chip on Glass) types are cheaper, but they phase out quicker and the interfacing (pinning, chip type) vary more often.

Main OLED glass suppliers are RiTdisplay and Univision. The Univision company is now officially called Wisechip, but the brand is still Univision.
Some LCD suppliers (in our case Bolymin and aMtec) have focussed on drop-in-replacement modules for current LCD products. In general these types are monochrome and range from character modules (2x16) and the smaller types such as 64x32 dots less than 1 inch displays to 5,5 inch displays with a resolution of 256x64 dots. The trend is still upwards in size and resolution, while the prices are becoming more and more competitive to the LCD display modules.

It is anticipated that the range and size of OLED monochrome displays will increase more and more, in general driven by mobile (telephone) and desktop monitor-alike applications.
